One Planet Pictures
- the story so far

One Planet Pictures was set up in 2005 by Robert Lamb, founder director of the Television Trust for Environment (TVE) and Editor for 400 programmes of Earth Report, the longest-running environment series on global TV.

Our first commission was from the BBC for World Challenge.

Robert Lamb describes the Shell-sponsored World Challenge series as “Big Brother meeting small scale enterprise.” BBC World viewers and Newsweek readers are given a chance to nominate a business that is an exemplar of best green practice. In 2005, 500 proposals were received. A demanding review process reduced these to a dozen finalists. In 2008 there were three times as many nominations as in 2005. Robert Lamb maintains his links with the non-profit world via Dev TV. "This is a pea in a pod relationship", explains Bernard Robert-Charrue, Dev TV's founder "Together we have 50 years experience in development film-making but as, for instance, with our broadband channel and podcasts we keep up with the You Tube/My Space media environment; Dev TV has strong links into the Francophone world and One Planet in the English speaking countries."

Through the Dev TV association has come the ...on the Frontline strand.  The pilot series with Annie Lennox was Doctors  on the Frontline, featuring Medicins Sans Frontieres in operation in its four most dangerous locations.

"The programme created so much reaction that we decided to keep the 'on the Frontline' generic title'", explains Lamb. To date, 29 programmes in the strand have been broadcast.

In addition the two organisations have collaborated on a series of commissioned DVD and video news release presentations. (See archive)

One Planet Pictures with Dev TV co-produced State of the Planet timed to coincide with the release of the UN's GEO4 assessment of the health of the Planet.

"The documentaries were the tip of an electronic pyramid", says Lamb. "The output included a video news release, a DVD presentation, a version for podcast and for the first time the full interviews were posted on the web at www.stateoftheplanet.org.uk

"It is difficult to see us taking a step back from this 'service-in-the-round' in future series."

Our newest production, Nature INC., is the revolutionary series that deals with pricing nature's services. We visited the almond fields in California who are completely dependent on pollination services provided by bees, Peru's disappearing glaciers are costing the country millions of dollars, etc. For the complete outline of the series and detailed background information to the programme themes, visit the website www.natureinc.org.

Digital Dividend asked if closing the digital dividend could be the magic bullet for making poverty history? Sporting Chance, with a panel that included Boris Becker and Olympic champions, discussed what role sport and sportsmen can play in peace-making? The Price of Peace was made specially for the BBC’s Peacemakers season. The venue was London’s Imperial War Museum and the proposition: "Is poverty the cause of most conflict in the 21st century"? And Advancing Sands – Deserts and Migration from the headquarters of the World Conservation Union in Switzerland focused on the new phenomenon – environmental refugees.

Upcoming are programmes on human trafficking, the 2012 World Cup and carbon trading.
