12.02.2010: Palestine

The Palestinians 60 Years On – Only Relief in Sight? May 2010 marks the 60th anniversary of the start of the UN’s relief effort for the 750,000 Palestinians who fled the 1949 war that led to the foundation of the state of Israel. Today, more than two thirds of the 6.5 million Palestinians are officially refugees still dependent on the aid administered by the UN that last year cost the international community close to a billion dollars.  For the most part, the refugees live in squalid camps in Gaza, West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, clinging uncompromisingly to their refugees’ “right of return” which is just as adamantly rejected by Israel. It’s a major explanation for a faltering peace process. We visit the camps, talk to refugees, academics and UN officials as well as Israeli and Arab policy-makers on both sides of the divide. Is there a solution? Or will the Palestinians, who make up more than a third of all the world’s refugees, remain dependent on the longest-ever relief programme indefinitely?
