Is Humanitarian Aid being hijacked by the “war on terror” and other armed conflicts around the world? Is the “humanitarian space” – defined in the mid 1990s by the then President of MSF Rony Brauman – shrinking?
Can the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality and impartiality still serve as blueprints in an increasingly hostile environment of internal conflicts, natural disasters and diminishing access to natural resources? Since 2006, attacks against aid workers have increased sharply, as they are caught in the crossfire of protracted conflicts or complex political environments, where they are no longer considered “neutral”.
