World Challenge 2007

Now in its 3rd year, World Challenge gives Internet browsers, BBC viewers and Newsweek readers a chance to nominate their favourite green business or community venture.

In 2007 nearly 1000 entries came in from over 90 countries - 3 times more than its inaugural year in 2005. After a rigorous evaluation process and jury review the shortlist is down to a dozen finalists. The 2007 winner, receiving a prize of US$20,000 was Tikapapa, a project from Peru helping desperately poor indigenous farmers to increase incomes by marketing the original potato verities. The runners up were a renewable energy enterprise from Nepal and an inspiring village schools project for the poorest of the poor in Haiti.

According to Robert Lamb, who came up with the World Challenge concept: "It's a chance for small-scale entrepreneurs with a conscience to have their day in the sun. Instead of some jury comprising the great and good deciding which one should win, the viewers can vote online for their favourite".
