World Challenge 2007 Now in its 3rd year, World Challenge gives Internet browsers, BBC viewers and Newsweek readers a chance to nominate their favourite green business or community venture. In 2007 nearly 1000 entries came in from over 90 countries - 3 times more than its inaugural year in 2005. After a rigorous evaluation process and jury review the shortlist is down to a dozen finalists. The 2007 winner, receiving a prize of US$20,000 was Tikapapa, a project from Peru helping desperately poor indigenous farmers to increase incomes by marketing the original potato verities. The runners up were a renewable energy enterprise from Nepal and an inspiring village schools project for the poorest of the poor in Haiti. |
According to Robert Lamb, who came up with the World Challenge concept: "It's a chance for small-scale entrepreneurs with a conscience to have their day in the sun. Instead of some jury comprising the great and good deciding which one should win, the viewers can vote online for their favourite".
